Stick-Built vs. Pole Barn vs. SIPs – What’s the Difference?
When it comes to building your dream barndominium or custom home, understanding the differences between construction methods is key to making informed decisions. At Performance by Design, we specialize in SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels), but we also value transparency and education. Let’s break down the differences between the three most common building methods: Stick-Built, Pole Barn, and SIPs.
Stick-Built Construction
Stick-built is the most traditional method of construction. This method uses individual lumber components—studs, rafters, and joists—assembled on-site to create the structure.
Pros:
Customizable and flexible design
Widely available materials and builders
Familiar process for many contractors and inspectors
Cons:
Slower build time due to on-site assembly
More waste generated
Less energy efficient unless upgraded with expensive insulation
Pole Barn Construction
Pole barn construction (also known as post-frame) uses large poles or posts buried in the ground to support the roof. Walls are then added, often with metal panels.
Pros:
Cost-effective and fast to build
Great for open spaces like garages, shops, or agricultural buildings
Less excavation and foundation work required
Cons:
Limited design flexibility for residential spaces
Lower insulation and energy efficiency unless specifically upgraded
May not meet residential building codes in all areas
SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels)
SIPs are prefabricated panels consisting of an insulating foam core sandwiched between structural boards. At Performance by Design, we believe SIPs are the future of efficient, high-performance building.
Pros:
Exceptionally energy-efficient
Faster construction with pre-cut panels
Stronger and more airtight than stick or pole builds
Long-term savings on heating and cooling costs
Cons:
Higher upfront material cost (offset by lower utility bills and less build labor)
Requires builders familiar with SIPs
Less flexibility in last-minute design changes
Which is Right for You?
Choosing between these methods comes down to your goals, timeline, and budget. If you’re building a simple shop or storage space, a pole barn might suffice. For traditional home aesthetics, stick-built is common. But if you’re aiming for a high-performance, modern build that saves money long-term—SIPs are your best bet.
